First off, I would like to congratulate Senator Obama on his historic victory tonight. He ran a fine campaign and I think Senator McCain will agree that it was a fine challenge for the GOP ticket this year. However, Senator Obama was still not the first choice of nearly half the electorate and thus does not have a mandate to do all the things he wishes to do such as universal healthcare and tax increases and more regulations on the economy. He will learn awfully quick that winning an election isn't even half the battle and he will now have to actually decide on the tough decisions that he used to be able to avoid.
The Republican party is now at a crossroads. We have been rejected. Our judgement and beliefs have been cast aside this election cycle for what appears to be a new hope on the horizon in the form of Barack Obama and his democratic cohorts in Congress. People will soon see that giving Washington over to solely the Democrats was a serious mistake. The Republican Party needs to show the American people that it is still willing to fight for the conservative beliefs that many people still believe in fundementally.
Now is not the time for the Republicans to buddy up with the Democrats on Capitol Hill. We need to return to conservative beliefs and be the thorn in the side of the Democrats for the next two years. It is time for someone to take charge of the Republicans in Washington and lead them on the fight that will eventually show the country who really has their best interests at heart. We need to fight for privatized social security, increased defense, medicare and medicaid reform, immigration reform, and against the immediate withdrawal from Iraq that is reclous and dangerous, and the universal health care system that will bankrupt this nation. We need to show the country that we still are going to fight for our ideas and the betterment of the country as a whole.
Tonight we were beaten. We have a choice to either lay down and let the Democrats run wild in Washington, or to get back off the ground and fight the battles that need to be won so that this country remains the beacon of hope for the world and the American dream remains the same.
Tomorrow, lets get off the ground and get to work. We have an uphill battle in front of us, but we have climbed this hill before and can do it again.
